the killer character profile

Character profile

The Killer

Name: Ray Waller
Age: 24
Profession: Killer

Background

As a young child he lost his parents and his sister in a car crash, from this he had no other family and ended up in foster care where he constantly moved around and ended up been with a family which abused him. He would end up getting left alone for days locked in his room and would often hear his foster parents arguing when the father had got drunk and often the next day he would get abused more.
He would often skip school to run away and hide and not return home for a while. When he turned 16 he left the foster home and applied to the police force.  When accepted he was driven to help other young people out of abusive families. A couple of years later we see the transferred to a worse area, which ended up near where his parents died and near his foster homes, and also promoted to deceive. His first case then was his foster father killing his foster mother, and then getting away with it, this happened on the anniversary of his family’s death.

As of this the killer ends up loosing it quitting his job and disappearing from society for a couple for a year. The next year he surfaces again and decided to play a game with the police as he feels that they failed him, this game is a game using the tarot cards with each different card symbolising a different way of murder.

Appearance

The killers appearance in not really going to be seen in the film, we hardly see any of the character face or his features and most of the scene that involve the killer will be in low-key lighting. We would not see all of the killers face at once as most of it would be kept in shadow this would create more suspicion about the character.
We would also see the character mainly from behind to help hide his face and keep his identity as secret, but this could also represent some of his past that he has kept secret form everyone. He always wears a black hoodie or leather jacket with his hood up to mask his identity, black leather gloves to make sure no finger prints are left behind. Also thick black boots as it gives the impression that he will go any where to do anything. He wears black jeans.

Personality

The killers personality is, that he is psychotic as of his back ground. He is a loner and spends most of his time by him self  or watching what other people. The killers mind is twisted and bend out of reality and he sees what he is doing as is  write and that it is helping the world. He is taking justice into his own hands as it failed to help him or to help people he tried to help.

What he does in film

The killer is sat at a desk in a dark room, has a pack of tarot cards in front of him. He turns over a number of cards and then calls a cop/deceive telling him that they are going to play a game and people are goanna die.
We see the killers tarot card in the victims house. We see him stud out side the house waiting. He walks up to the letter box and looks through it, and then walks around the back and gets into the house. He then kills her by what ever was show on the tarot card he turned over.

Audience profile

Group 6 – Audience profile.

Our group chose our film to have a age 15 certificate, this is because within the film theirs scenes of death, violence, scenes containing weapons and strong language. If a person who was under the age limit was to watch our film they might find certain scenes distressing. The fact it has 15 certificate shows that the fact of death is certain within the film and occurs numerous times within the film. The fact the film has violence makes the film a 15, the violent nature features frequently throughout the film; it comes across in brutal and in a briefly encounters sexual violence. Often throughout the film they’ll be scenes with weapons shown in them, this raises the age to a 15 due to some of the weapons shown are a sensitive to younger viewers. The fact our film has bad language in obviously raises the age certificate as young children are unable to hear foul language as theirs a fear they could repeat it without knowing what it means.

Our film's whole age range is aimed at males and females aged 15 – 50, this gives us a wide age range for people to watch the film on their own or with friends, but also people with teenagers aged 15/16 who want to watch the film with them are still going to be interested in watching it. The fact the film is aged 15 upwards is another good point because teenagers (aged 15+) can go and watch the film with their friends. We had chosen to put a 15 certificate on our film as the film's main character is a killer and if anyone under 15 was to watch the film, they might get scared and also might get the wrong impression thinking, 'its alright to kill people.' Someone older then fifty may find the film hard to follow and not really interested in the film. I'd say our film is a scary psychological thriller that families can watch although it is a film someone could watch on their own.

Analysis of se7en

Analysis of se7en – First 10 minuets

In the first scene minutes we are introduced to Morgan Freeman’s character. In this scene we see Morgan Freeman’s character getting ready to go to work. This scene uses long shots to medium close ups. This allows you to see the room around Morgan freeman and how he is dressed. This allows the audience to think about what occupation Morgan Freeman’s character has. B
ut the audience is shown his occupation when a close up is used on the objects that is set on a unit. One of these objects is a police badge that tells the audience that he is a police officer. Also the whole scene is using dim lighting and has slow passé. This helps to build and eerie feeling to the scene that also helps the audience to determine what genre the film is

The second scene is showing a crime scene.  The scene starts with a medium shot of a body laid on the floor which then cuts to a long shot that is used as an establishing shot showing the whole room.  Then we are introduced to Brad Pitt’s character who we can tell is working with Morgan freeman’s character as they enter together. When in this room the lighting is again dim which creates an eerie feeling to the scene which also has the crime scene factor that also adds to the whole eerie feel. Within this scene Morgan freeman’s and Brad Pitt’s characters then move outside. While outside there are only medium shots. Also when the 2 characters are stood outside the audience can see that it is raining. This also adds to the eerie feel that also helps the audience to figure the genre of the film

The opening sequence does not include any long shots of the setting; you would assume that the things taking place are happening in someone’s home or office, as the props are what you would typically find in these locations. However the location is not shown creating tension for the audience. All of the objects shown are shown using extreme close ups. This creates suspense as the audience do not know who is creating this file and doing these things as they cannot see their face or where they are. All of the shots in the opening sequence are indoors with low key lighting which gives the setting a dull and suspicious feel. Most of the colour in the opening sequence is black and white but when the photos are being shown being developed when the colour changes to red. The opening sequence is in a montage format with a various different edits. Some are straight cuts and some cross fades or fade to black. The fading gives the effect of the clips being linked together and creates an eerie feel, and the fade to black reflects the sincerity and darkness of the overall film.

Genera psychological thriller

Genre psychological thriller

Techniques used

  • Low Key Lighting - In psychological thrillers low key lighting is used to unsettle the      viewer  when watching this film. This could be by ether the low key lighting affecting the way we are able to see the character or to hide parts of the setting. The low key lighting on the character could distort what we are able to see of them by hiding large parts of their body or by hiding features on their face which would unsettle the viewers.

  • Confined spaces -  In psychological thrillers confined spaces are used in films a lot, to scare the audience and also to make them feel  uncomfortable and give the idea of insecurity to an audience when watching the film. This is used as any phobia is aimed to make the audience members to feel insecurity about the things that they dread. (E.g. Bats, the dark, heights, falling) The use of confined spaces could also be used to make the audience feel sympathy to ward a character in the film if it is known that they are scared of confined spaces but also help to play on the audiences fears as with it been confined spaces could make the audience feel that they a re a lot closer to what is going on and that they could be right there. This is shown in the film 127 hours as the use of the confined space more graphic and scary knowing that there is very little chance to escape.

  • Shadows - While shadows are closely linked with low key lighting in pyschological thriller. They are used to show a sense of danger and to the story and can make the audience feel scared and vulnerable, as quite often we only see the killers shadow and often we see the murder happen in shadows. We also know that the often things can be hidden in the shadows and make it hard to see things.

  • Time -  Time is often used in pyschological thriller as we often see flash backs and dreams about what has happened to make the character who they are today and or why they are  acting the way they do.

  • colour - There often is uses of black and white in pyschological thriller as well as the colour of red as this is the colour of blood and the use of this against the black and white would make it stand out more, but also red is the colour of danger, violence and evil. This also helps create an unsettling atmosphere and cna help to build tension.
pyschological thriller often focus on the antagonist mind using a first person narrative to give us an inside luck on how our antagonist ticks. The use of what is real or not is quite often used . This can intise the view it pay attention and to make they try to figure out what is real and what is not, however if this is not done correctly it can often leave the  viewers are left confused. The characters often doubt who they are or what they arte meant to be doing with there life.
